Things Baserunners Should Always Be Taught

  1. Always know the situation.

  2. The player's job is to start movement to the next base. The coach's job is to stop it.

  3. Take a good "secondary lead".

  4. Take the proper lead depending on the situation and number of outs.

  5. Pick up the third base coach early.

  6. Anticipate the "dirt ball pitch". Expect the ball in the dirt. Read the "dirt ball" and use the pitch in the dirt to advance to the next base.

  7. Always run through first base on infield plays; round first base when the ball goes into the outfield and be ready to advance to second base.
